BLUEXSUN

BLUEXSUN, 2025/2026

BLUEXSUN takes as its starting point a question raised by German Early Romanticism around 1800: Can an instrument reveal more than the naked eye? For Novalis, nature was not a passive object but a living language that revealed itself through symbols. The camera lens becomes just such a Romantic instrument. As sunlight penetrates its layers of glass and coatings, it leaves behind reflections—not optical flaws, but hidden signatures of its journey; evidence that every act of seeing is simultaneously an act of transformation.

Almost a century later, on the slopes of Mont Sainte-Victoire, Paul Cézanne devoted himself to this same mystery of light. Building on the discoveries of Impressionism, he pursued a different path: his aim was not merely to capture the fleeting impression, but the enduring order revealed within the light. His paintings transformed the light of Provence into matter, turning the ephemeral into something permanent.

BLUEXSUN reverses this process. Returning to Cézanne’s mountain, sunlight was captured using an iPhone and transferred to a 64 × 64 LED display; there, 4,096 light-emitting diodes reconstruct the captured light and project it into the viewer’s eyes. Pigment is replaced by pixels; reflected light by generated light.

BLUEXSUN bridges two centuries of distinct imaging technologies—spanning Romantic philosophy of perception and Cézanne’s painting to the self-illuminating digital image.
