A concept by Jurgen Ostarhild
A non-fungible image for everyone: unique and verifiable on a blockchain, yet free to take and kept by the person, not by a wallet or a marketplace.
An NFT populaire is a non-fungible image, born from an event on the blockchain, verifiable by anyone, given to whoever is present and kept by the person, not by a platform.
Jurgen Ostarhild, Paris, October 2026
A work is an NFT populaire when it meets all three conditions.
Each image derives from exactly one on-chain event (a block, a transaction, a hash), and anyone can check it against the public chain.
No wallet, no fee, no account. Anyone present can keep it.
The file lives on the holder's own device. No marketplace, no listing, no resale mechanism is built in.
Its natural setting is a public place: everyone who is there can claim their own NFT populaire, on their own phone, for free.
Every few seconds a new block is added to the Ethereum blockchain. Its hash, a string of 64 characters, is read as circular color gradients. Each block exists once, so each image exists once. Whoever is there when a block arrives can claim it on their phone.
The NFT proved that a blockchain can produce images that are unique, verifiable and tied to a precise moment. It also turned those images into speculative assets, locked behind wallets, gas fees and marketplaces, and owned by very few. The NFT populaire keeps the first and drops the second.
Populaire is meant in the French sense of "of the people", as in art populaire or the Théâtre National Populaire, not simply "popular". The term is always written in French. In Paris, populaire carries the street and its manifestations, and at the same time a certain chic, the gauche caviar that wears the popular as a style. The NFT populaire keeps both edges.
The term came up in Paris in October 2026, during a wave of student demonstrations.
